THE SHORT ANSWER

What you need to know

Use your travel SIM for mobile data and decide separately whether your home number needs to stay active. Turn off home-line data roaming and automatic data switching as precautions, then check your carrier’s call, SMS and voicemail rules. These settings reduce accidental data use but do not guarantee that your home line cannot incur charges.

At a glance

  • Data, calls and texts are separate choices. Selecting a travel data line does not silence your home number.
  • Keeping a home SIM available for verification codes requires a carrier-specific charging check.
  • Disable the home line if you do not need normal cellular calls or SMS, and arrange another authentication method first.

1. Understand what two active lines actually mean

Dual SIM lets a compatible phone keep two mobile subscriptions available. It does not merge their allowances or make the home carrier irrelevant. Your travel line may carry app traffic while your home number remains available for calls and texts. Each subscription still has its own terms.

Before buying, check the exact model, purchase region, supported SIM combination and carrier restrictions. Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier when traveling. Under Settings, General, About, look for No SIM Restrictions beside Carrier Lock. An eSIM-capable model name alone is not sufficient proof of compatibility.

2. Choose whether to keep your home line enabled

Start with one question: do you need your ordinary number during the trip? A banking code may justify keeping it available, but prepare an approved alternative, such as the bank’s authenticator, before departure. Do not discover your only login method is unavailable after switching the line off.

Home-line choices and their practical trade-offs
SetupWhat remains availableWhat to check
Home line disabled; travel data enabledTravel internet; no normal cellular calls or SMS on the home lineAlternative login methods and any continuing account charges
Home line enabled; home data roaming offHome calls and SMS may remain available alongside travel dataReceiving SMS, answered calls, outgoing texts, voicemail and WiFi calling terms
Home line used with a roaming packageServices included by that specific packageActivation triggers, destination coverage and separate charges for each line

Disabling the home line is a clearer separation than merely changing the data default. It is not a promise of zero charges across every provider: existing subscriptions, earlier usage and carrier-side services still require review.

3. Set the iPhone data line deliberately

Give the subscriptions recognizable labels, such as Home and Travel. In Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, select the travel line. Review the home line separately and turn its data roaming off. If Allow Cellular Data Switching is available, leave it off when your priority is keeping data on the travel subscription.

Follow the travel provider’s instructions for roaming on the travel line. Some travel services need it enabled. “Turn roaming off” is therefore incomplete advice unless it identifies which SIM. Changing the home-line setting is not the same as disabling the travel connection.

Apple describes travel setup prompts in iOS 26 and later, but says you might receive them. Return-home switching also depends on country or region. Check your actual settings rather than expecting a prompt or an automatic handover. Apple explicitly warns that keeping both lines on can still produce home-carrier roaming fees.

4. On Pixel, check data and calling behavior separately

Google’s Pixel instructions use Settings, Network & internet, SIMs. Only one SIM can be the default for data; calls and text preferences are separate. Select the travel SIM for data and turn off Automatic data switching if you want to avoid that switching behavior. Review home-line roaming separately.

Calls introduce model-specific exceptions. Google documents data using the calling SIM during calls on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and earlier, with a Data during calls setting for a non-default SIM. Review that option rather than assuming the data default controls every situation.

For Pixel 8a and later, Google’s dual-call feature requires mobile data on both SIMs, automatic switching for the second SIM and carrier-supported WiFi calling. Those requirements can conflict with a conservative travel setup. These are Pixel instructions, not a universal guide for every Android phone.

5. Check what actually triggers your carrier’s charges

Ask your home carrier about receiving verification SMS, making or answering calls, sending texts, voicemail forwarding and retrieval, and WiFi calling abroad. Confirm the destination and exact plan. Keeping the line for codes does not mean every other service on that line becomes free.

WiFi calling is not universally free either. Verizon says it is not included with TravelPass and applies international long-distance rates to WiFi calls to countries other than the US. Your carrier may use different rules. Distinguish carrier WiFi calling from a voice call inside an internet messaging app.

6. Complete this checklist before departure

  1. Confirm exact device and regional compatibility, carrier unlock status and the travel plan’s setup instructions.
  2. Label both lines and save the carrier’s relevant roaming terms for reference.
  3. Decide whether you need home-number SMS; arrange another authentication route if disabling the home line.
  4. Select travel data, disable home data roaming and review automatic switching and data-during-call options.
  5. Review outgoing call and text preferences so an accidental tap does not select an unwanted line.
  6. Keep installation details and support contacts accessible without depending on the connection you are setting up.

7. Verify the connection on arrival and after returning

Once the travel plan should be usable, temporarily disconnect from WiFi and open a small webpage. Confirm the selected data line and inspect its usage counter. If it fails, reconnect to WiFi and review the travel provider’s instructions rather than enabling home roaming as a reflex.

After returning, check that home service and your preferred data line are restored. Turn off travel lines no longer needed. Keep the eSIM installed until you understand the provider’s reuse or reinstall rules; disabling a line and deleting its profile are different actions.

Common questions

Does turning off home data roaming stop all charges?

No. It is a data precaution, not a blanket block on calls, texts, voicemail or account charges. Check your carrier’s terms for those services.

Can I receive bank codes with my home SIM switched off?

Not through normal cellular SMS on that disabled line. Arrange another supported verification method before departure, or review carrier terms before keeping the home line enabled.

Should roaming be on for the travel eSIM?

Follow that plan’s instructions. Travel-line requirements can differ from your home-line precautions. Identify the SIM before changing its roaming setting.

Will my iPhone switch back automatically at home?

Do not rely on it. Apple describes return switching for iOS 26 and later as country- or region-dependent. Verify that your primary line is enabled.
